X-ray Exam

X-ray
Exam.

An electromagnetic imaging technology that precisely examines hard or deep structures such as the spine, bones, and deep joints. It uses differences in tissue density to create an image of internal structures.

§ 01How It Works

What Is X-ray? How It Works

X-rays are electromagnetic waves with a much shorter wavelength than visible light. Their high energy lets them pass through objects, recording differences in tissue density as light and dark areas.

STEP 01
Emitting RadiationEmit

An X-ray generator emits high-energy electromagnetic waves into the body

STEP 02
Transmission and AbsorptionAbsorb

The amount that passes through varies with tissue density — bone appears white, muscle and organs appear gray, and lungs or air appear black

STEP 03
Recording the ImageRecord

X-rays that pass through the body reach a film or digital sensor, creating a high-contrast image

Bone
White
High density absorbs nearly all X-rays
Muscle & Organs
Gray
Some X-rays pass through
Air (Lungs)
Black
X-rays pass through freely

§ 03Complementary

How Ultrasound and X-ray Complement Each Other

USUltrasoundUltrasound

Specialized for examining soft tissue such as ligaments, muscles, and nerves.

Limitation: Difficult to see through air or behind bone → supplemented with X-ray
XRX-rayX-ray

Specialized for examining hard tissue such as the spine, bones, and deep joints.

Limitation: Difficult to distinguish soft tissue or blood flow → supplemented with ultrasound
