Polysomnography
Exam.
The standard test that comprehensively measures biological signals during sleep — brain waves, eye movement, breathing, and heart rhythm — to accurately diagnose sleep quality and sleep disorders.
What Is Polysomnography?

Polysomnography is the standard test for diagnosing sleep structure and sleep disorders. It simultaneously records various biological signals during sleep, including brain waves, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rhythm, breathing, and oxygen saturation.
What's Measured
Distinguishes sleep stages (REM, NREM)
Confirms REM sleep
Measures jaw and leg muscle movement
Monitors heart rate rhythm
Airflow through the nose and mouth, chest and abdominal movement
Real-time measurement of blood oxygen levels
Records snoring intensity and sleep position

Connection to Chronic Pain

During sleep, the body repairs damaged organs and tissue about 20 times more efficiently than during waking activity.
A night's sleep consists of 3 to 5 repeating cycles, each lasting about 90 minutes.
When sleep quality declines, the body's repair efficiency drops to daytime levels.
As we age or as a pain condition persists, more muscles and ligaments need repair.
If awakenings during the night shorten total sleep time or disrupt the normal sleep cycle pattern, tissue recovery becomes difficult.
Chronic pain patients have more damaged tissue, but often can't get adequate tissue repair during sleep.
Polysomnography identifies the cause, leading to sleep treatment that directly helps chronic pain recovery.
